Hogue Skinner

Patented, the patent on the Hogue Skinner was issued: United States Patent No.: US 7,485,032 B1

Now, all we have to do is figure out how to get it manufactured!  That's what we're working on now.

Plans are to see if we can find a local manufacturer so we can keep production local.  We plan to try to get a few of the skinners in the hands of some hunters this fall to make sure we've got the bugs worked out.  Then, when we have production figured out, and all the bugs ironed out, we'll probably start taking orders.

The Hogue Skinner that is going to revolutionize deer processing.  This is a mechanical skinning aid that eliminates most of the labor and many of the problems in all the ways people skin deer and other animals.

With the Hogue Skinner, one person can skin a deer with little effort and keep the meat as clean as if it were in a commercial packing house, no matter where you're at or how remote it is!

The latest prototype was tested to 2500 pounds so we're comfortable that it will handle the 2000 pound winches and do what we need it to do.

We skin our deer from the hind legs down, but this system will work just as well (maybe better) skinning from the head down.  One of the options we're considering is making it possible to skin from the head down, then flip the deer over to eviserate and quarter or bone out.

What makes this skinner revolutionary is that one person, man or woman, working alone, can completely process a deer in just a few minutes, with practically no labor, or help, at all.

The Hogue Skinner works by connecting the hide to the base of the skinner and pulling the animal up out of the skin.   The carcass never touches anything (especially not the ground!).

If you're skinning a big older deer, when skinning from the hind legs down, you may have to help a little with a knife in places where it's not peeling the hide off.   On one prototype with a 1500 pound hoist, we had to help it a little on the back of the hind legs.  (The really hard thing about desiging a skinner is you can only test it during hunting season, then, if a change is required you don't want to quit hunting to go back to the drawing board!)

Although we haven't developed the packaging yet, we designed the system to break down into pieces no longer than 6 feet long in an effort to ease shipping (and maybe lower the cost), and make transporting and storing it easier.  It can easily be assembled and set up in well less than an hour or so by one person, much quicker and especially safer with some help.

We have the optional lights and electric hoist on the prototype we're using in the pictures, but the basic model needs no electricity, so you can set it up anywhere, no matter how remote your camp is.

If you live in a colder climate and you like to let your deer age some before cutting it up, you can lift the processed carcass up out of the reach of dogs easily after you're finished.   No more tree limbs or barn rafters, this is the modern way of doing it.

The skinner will come in a bare basic model ready to assemble and use immediately (with no options), which will include a patented Hogue Singletree, hand operated winch (with all necessary cable, hooks & pulleys), two Hogue Ball-Noose-Chain hide grabbing devices, and the tower.

Additional available options will include:

  • ground tie-downs with locking capabilities
  • light kit
  • knife trays
  • step sets (for climbing up the leg of the skinner)
  • scale kit for weighing (steps will be required)
  • (later on) electric hoist

This thing is going to change everything!   Stay tuned to see when they are going to hit the market.
